'Cereals 2009

'gbs were a participant at the Cereals 2009 event as part of the 'Just Oats' stand demonstrating how the oat industry is working together from breeding to end user to improve the knowledge of all involved and shorten the communication chain.
Just Oats demonstrated new varieties of oats from the breeding programme at Aberystwyth, Naked Oats marketed by GBSeeds, Organic opportunities and showed oat products from members of BOBMA (The British Oat & Barley Millers Association).

Cereals is the UK's major Agricultural show and with up to 17 of us manning the stand we were all kept very busy with serious interest in this crop which is one of the few early combinable break crops available. The straw incorporates a higher percentage of P&K than any other cereal and with forward contracts available the modern oat is proving to be a real alternative in the rotation''.

HGCA Recommended Lists for 2009/10

Twenty one varieties have been added to the HGCA Recommended Lists for 2009/10.
It has been a bumper year for new winter wheats with eight new recommendations spread across all fournabim groups. "There really is something for everyone," said HGCA RL Technical Manager, Bill Handley. "We have a new Group 1, three Group 2's, one Group 3 and three Group 4's."

Gallant is the first variety since 2002 to go straight into nabim group1 and it is higher yielding than Xi19, with better grain quality and agronomic characteristics. The new nabim Group 2 varieties Panorama and Ketchum are very high yielding, while Qplus is the first bread-making variety with orange wheat blossom midge (OWBM) resistance. Scout is a nabim Group 3 variety with good grain characteristics. Viscount andCassius are soft-milling Group 4 varieties while Grafton is hard-milling and has a specific recommendation for growers wanting an early maturing variety. There is also one new spring wheat; Granary.

Four varieties have been removed from the list including Riband which was first recommended in 1989 and so came close to a 20 year reign on the List.

The only new winter barley is Volume, a very high yielding hybrid 6-row type. The spring barley list has three new entries all of which are potential malting types. They are Cropton, Concerto and Forensic.

The winter oilseed rape list has been completely revised with separate lists for the East - West and North regions. "Recently we have seen performance in the two regions drifting apart", said HGCA Recommended Lists Manager, Dr Jim McVittie. "We now see few varieties equally suited to both regions so it makes things much simpler to separate the Lists completely."

Eight new varieties have been added: PR46W21, Dimension, Hammer and Vision for the East and West Region: Cuillin and Emerson in the North Region; and, for the first time, two semi-dwarf varieties, PR45D03 and DK Secure. DK Secure is recommended for both regions while PR45D03 is only recommended in the East and West Region.

Summaries of the new HGCA Recommended Lists are available on the HGCA website www.hgca.com and the full HGCA Recommended Lists booklet will be distributed
